Custom Fitting - The One Thing Every Golfer Should Do This Year

If there is one thing that every golfer should do this year it's to find a spare 30 minutes to get a club fitting with a qualified PGA professional.  This month, Damien Town (not pictured), full playing member of Eastlake accepted the challenge from Alex Sutherland, Eastlake Golf Club's Assistant Professional and this is his account of the experience.
......................................
I have been playing golf for four years at both Eastlake and Chatswood Golf Club.  During this time I have had three full sets of irons, 4 drivers, 4 hybrids, a 3 wood, 4 putters and a sizeable handful of wedges.  Why so many you might ask?....Well yeah, especially now that I have just realised how many clubs I have had and replaced in the hope of getting my handicap below 20.  Not to mention the money I have invested in my game.

Recently Alex challenged me to stop buying clubs of the rack and work out what was best suited for my game.  So in what turned out to be 30 minutes of my time was worth more than all the golf clubs I have ever bought.  So what did I learn...?

Irons - the R11 Taylormade were fine but the shafts were an inch and a half short.  So finally I had an explanation as to why my iron shots have been a bit skewiff since buying them a year ago.  For a small investment my shafts will be adjusted and ready to play in 48 hours

Wedges - my 52 degree Cleveland GC 14 had a good shaft but one that was built for a midget not someone six foot one tall.  My 56 degree Taylor made TPZ with 16 degrees bounce was well not right for me except for bunker play

Hybrids - both Ping Rapture v2 look great but both have different shafts and grip sizes.  These will be resolved in a few days but a few lessons with those wouldn't hurt

Driver - I really did break my driver so there was a need to find the right driver for me in this process.  Through a process of hitting 20 drivers with differing lofts and shaft combinations I settled on the PING i20 with 10.5 degrees of loft.  This was a revelation.  If it wasn't for Alex I would have bought the Taylormade RBZ off the rack and wasted $400

Putter - We didn’t get to the putter which is a Taylormade White Ghost and this will be for another day.

What should you do next?  Honestly this is one of the best uses of 30 minutes of my time in ages.  Like Alex challenged me, I challenge all golfers to make a 30 or 60 minute appointment with Alex, Ross, or any PGA professional to make sure your clubs are fitted for you.  Who knows you might drop a few shots in the process and get more enjoyment out of your game.
