Hole 10B Closed

The Green and surrounds for hole 10B will be rebuilt over the next few months. This green has been used recently as a nursery to fix damage to other greens caused by the vandalism earlier in the year. If your tee shot from the 11th tee finds this area, there is a drop zone located close to for relief.

Simon and his team are also building a nursery behind the back of the 11th green, next to the halfway house. Again, if you manage to find that area whilst playing the 11th or the 7th Holes, please drop in the designated drop zone.

Greens Vertidraining

On Tuesday August 16th contractors will be onsite to Vertidrain the greens with 12mm solid tines. Tee times will commence at 10am to give the contractors a head start and enable the maintenance team to prepare the course before play.

What is Vertidraining?

A Vertidrain is a machine that is connected to the back of a small tractor and punches 12mm solid tine holes into the turf surface at around 60mm spacings. The depth of the hole is around 200mm.

Why do we need to Vertidrain (Deep Tine)

Our conventional aeration program is completed once a month with a machine called a Pro-Core. This machine can only aerate to a maximum depth of 100mm with 10mm solid tines. Over time, the subsoil around 200mm below the surface becomes compacted resulting in poor draining greens, shallow roots and weak areas forming in playing surfaces. The Vertidrain machine, with its 200mm+ depth capacity will shatter the compacted subsoil allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to infiltrate into the soil profile a lot easier. The benefits of deep Vertidraining include relieving deep compaction, and encouraging deeper roots in the soil profile. The stronger and deeper the root system the better and healthier the turfgrass plant will be.

Timing

This process would normally be incorporated into the coring program on Monday the 4th and Tuesday 5th September  greens, however the contractors were not available due to a prior booking. After the greens have been Vertidrained, they will be rolled to smooth the putting surface out. For around two weeks the greens will still present small open holes but will close over with regular rolling and cutting.

Correct Drop on 14th Hole

In the last newsletter, we talked about several ways some players are breaking the rules during competition rounds at Eastlake GC. One such example is taking incorrect drops when their ball has found a penalty area. One area of concern is the 14th hole, where players tend to drop much further down than the point their ball actually crossed the hazard line (point of entry). Refer to image below.

It has been observed on occasion, players hitting their ball into the left hazar and their ball crossing the hazard line around point "A". However, we hear of players dropping their ball around point "B". In other words, they drop approximately 60 - 80 meters ahead of where they should, making their 3rd shot much easier.

In summary the correct place to drop and take your penalty is Point 'A'. Which is where the ball actually crosses the hazard line.

We understand that determining the exact point of entry into a hazard is difficult and there will always be some guess work. Check and agree on a point of entry with your marker before taking a drop and avoid the innuendo that comes with not proceeding correctly.

Trophy Suggestions

The club is considering moving away from trophies and to give other prizes for their major competitions. This has proven to be a difficult decision as we would like to hand out something memorable but also useful. If anyone has any ideas on great prizes for the clubs major competitions, we would love to hear them.
