Four-Ball Championships

The final round of the Four-Ball Championship last Saturday was an absolute thriller. It was played under nicer conditions than round 1 as the scores reflected.

In A Grade, defending champions Darren Spalding and Pearse Donnelly knew they had to shoot something special to give themselves a chance being 5 shots behind the lead after the first round and they did just that. The pair combined for a terrific 11 under par (60) on the day to beat Harley Holohan and Scott Campbell by 1 shot.

In A Reserve, the pairs of Chris Aquilina / Patrick Forrester and Barak Rodwell / Mark Thompson finished tied on 150, meaning they will play together this Saturday in an 18-hole playoff to decide the winner.

B Grade was not short on excitement either, with the pairs of George Theore / Dion Karadimitropoulos and Michael Sowter / Gary Hollingshed finishing all tied after 36 holes (154 scratch). The teams went out again for a sudden death playoff, where Michael Sowter was able to get up and down for par on the first hole to secure the victory for his team.

In C Grade, the pair of Walter Devecchis and Thomas Duffy shot a great second round score of 84 strokes to claim victory by three strokes, the largest margin across all grades.

Congratulations to all of this year's winners and good luck to the two pairs playing off for the A Reserve title tomorrow morning. Please click on the link below for the final standings:

FINAL RESULTS

14th Hole

Recent Rain at Eastlake GC

Members will likely have experienced for themselves the storms that hit Sydney earlier this week following unseasonably warm and humid weather. The course was likewise affected, with 113mm falling on the Monday and Tuesday alone.

Downpours like this play havoc with the Club's bunkers and paths, with the course team having to work exceptionally hard to return them to the standard expected by members and guests.

The section below from Simon Blagg outlines the plans for some upcoming cart path work which will reduce the time and manpower necessary to repair our cart paths following such deluges.

13th Hole

Course Pathway Upgrade

One of the biggest challenges following a major storm is the repair of cart paths following subsidence and erosion. The poor condition of the cart paths has become a significant issue, causing damage to the club's machinery and golf cart fleet as well as posing a hazard to golfers walking the course.

In response to this issue, a Master Plan for the Club's cart paths has been created and accepted by the Board. This major project will likely take several years to complete but will improve the quality of the playing surfaces and members enjoyment of the course.

The first section of pathway to be replaced will commence in the first week of March and will be from the 15th green to the 17th tee, a stretch of around 300 meters. This project will cause some disruption to the normal course layout however directional signage and safety roping will be in place to ensure golfers know which way to go. We anticipate the 15th and 17th holes to remain in play during this time.

Phase two of the project will commence in early April, with the area next to the 13th tee to be repaired and a new concrete pathway and turning bay installed beside the tee. The road to the left and behind the 13th green will be replaced with a new concrete path and a ramp will be installed behind the green for players with pull buggies. These areas were deemed the most critical and labor intensive in terms of repairs following a storm and will greatly improve the playability and access to these holes.

We apologies for the inconvenience this work will create but members will no doubt appreciate these new paths once complete.

Pace of Play

The data presented below represents a summary of Pace of Play at the Club since the beginning of the year. Members will notice that the pace of the field slows throughout the morning, with early groups finishing in well under 4 hours and groups teeing off around 11 finishing in approximately 4.5 hours. Whilst most Clubs would aspire to have these Pace-of-Play statistics for their field, they show the importance of early groups keeping up with the group in front so as not to unnecessarily delay the round of members playing late.
