Treasurer’s Update

As Treasurer, I am pleased to advise members of the financial results for the first six months of our financial year.

The Club made a surplus of $388,000 for the Half Year ending December 2023, compared with $163,000 for the same period for the previous year. The half yearly results are better than budgeted, primarily due to the very conservative assumptions factored in at the start-up of the new bistro following the Clubhouse renovations (completed in 2023).

The table below shows the monthly actual and budget numbers for the period together with January 2024.

Coring benefits

Green Renovations

This week saw our course team carry out the biannual green renovations, with 16mm cores being punched in all putting green surfaces and sand applied to fill the core holes.

This process is vital to the health of our greens, by increasing oxygen levels within the soil and removing excess organic matter near the surface. The image (above) provides the basic agronomic advantages gained from coring turf, with the improved root growth one of the key outcomes.

Cart Path

Cart Path Program

Nearly 450 meters of concrete cart paths have now been installed between the 3rd green to 4th tee and the 15th green and 17th tee. Our course team has been heavily involved in the process, installing drainage around these paths and turfing up to the sides to tie them into the design of the hole.

The focus will now turn to the 13th hole where paths will be built beside the tee, as well along the existing path to the left and behind the green.

Members will be updated as to course set up whilst this work takes place, but it is expected that players will need to head up past the 6th tee after completing the 12th hole until the paths can re-open to traffic. We thank members for their patience during this process, and the feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive.

Car Park Coral Tree Removal

Car Park Tree Removal

Members visiting the Club this week will have noticed the removal of the Coral Tree and under trimming of other tree branches which was done during the Green Renovations closure.

Coral trees are classified as an environmental weed in NSW and are infamous as one of the worst tree species for dropping limbs and falling over. The location of this tree within the car park made this a risky proposition, not to mention the effects the tree's roots were having on the surrounding car park.

With the tree now gone, the Club will advise members of the date and possible interruption caused when the area is resealed with asphalt.

Pennants Wrap Up

Sadly, the Club's Mixed and Major Pennant seasons came to an end last weekend despite some strong results throughout both team's season(s).

Our Major Pennant team travelled to Glenmore Heritage Valley, knowing they needed a victory to progress through to the knockout section. Unfortunately, the team missed out by the barest of margins, going down 4 matches to 3 to finish second in their division.

Despite the team just missing out on winning their division, there were many positives the team can take away from their efforts including Harley Holohan receiving a Golf NSW medal for his undefeated performance throughout the season.

Our Mixed Pennant team hosted Woollahra in the final match of the season, knowing that whilst they couldn't win their division, they could prevent Woollahra from progressing. The team played extremely well and when all was said and done, both teams finished tied 2.5 matches a piece. After a tense wait, it became apparent that the result was enough for Woollahra, with them qualifying by 1.5 matches over second place Mona Vale.

Thank you to all the members of these two sides for their efforts representing the Club, and to those who gave up their time to manage, caddie and cheer on our teams.

Repairing a divot

Course Care

Members should be aware of the following course care measures as the course recovers from the renovation process:

- Pitch Marks: Members are reminded to repair their divot on each green and one additional ball mark, to ensure a swift recovery and smoother putting surfaces.

- Bunker Rakes: Bunker rakes should be used following each bunker shot to smooth out the affected area and are to be left flat, in the middle of the bunker (not outside the bunker).

- Divots: Members should be well aware of the need to carefully fill and smooth their divots with sand. This small act improves the speed at which the divot repairs, ensures a nice even surface and improves the health of the turf.

Capital Works - Expression of Interest

Members will have noted the various capital projects being done around the Club and the Course this year (cart paths, chipping green work, golf carts etc.). When appointing suppliers for these jobs, the Board seeks several quotes before choosing the best, most readily available and most cost-effective option.

It was recently suggested that as part of this process we should advise the membership, so that any members who wish to quote and be considered for this work can be included. To this end we are currently seeking quotes for the following projects:

1. Repair or replacement of the Clubhouse Roof

2. Resealing of the asphalt area within the Club car park

Should any members work in these industries and would like to quote on these jobs, please contact General Manager Rob Blain at manager@eastlakegolfclub.com.au.
