Jack Newton Week of Golf

Eastlake Golf Club is proud to celebrate the outstanding efforts of a number of our talented juniors who recently competed in the prestigious Jack Newton Junior Week of Golf held at Brighton Lakes, Strathfield, Lakeside, Cumberland, and Muirfield golf courses.

Luca Locantro (pictured) delivered a strong performance, finishing Tied 16th with a score of +16, narrowly ahead of Darrick Yang who finished Tied 21st with a score of +20. We also commend Matthew Xu for his participation in the event.

The tournament saw some incredible competition, with Blake Hodges from NSWGC taking the win on an impressive score of 6-under.

Congratulations to our juniors for their hard work and dedication. You've done Eastlake proud, and we look forward to seeing your continued success!

Four-Ball Championships

The Four-Ball Championships are scheduled to commence on Saturday, 8th February. This is a 36-hole Four-Ball Stroke Event, where teams of two play their own ball, and the better gross score on each hole counts towards the team's total.

After 18 holes, the Top 8 teams in each grade will advance to the second round via seeded draw. The timesheet for the first round opens on Thursday, 30th January.

Conditions of Play, including Grade brackets, are detailed HERE.

Vale George Costopoulos

It is with great sadness that we inform members of the passing of member George Costopoulos on Wednesday night, surrounded by his family and friends. George was 60 years old.

A member of Eastlake Golf Club for the past ten years, George was a friend to many within the Club. His warmth, kindness, and camaraderie left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

George's funeral will be held at St Spyridon's Church next week, with details to be shared by his family in due course. On behalf of everyone at Eastlake Golf Club, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to George's family and friends during this difficult time.

Storm Clean Up

Last weekend, our course and surrounding suburbs were battered by a severe storm, with wind gusts reaching up to 100km/h at the airport. Many areas across Sydney experienced significant damage, with fallen trees causing power outages, property damage, and disruptions.

We are relieved to report that Eastlake Golf Club fared relatively well compared to the broader impact in our community. While we did lose a few trees and sustained some short-term damage to bunkers on account of the rain, the storm's effects were less severe than anticipated.

Our heartfelt thanks go to our course team, who worked swiftly to remove fallen limbs, clear scattered debris, and restore the course to playable condition. Their prompt response has ensured minimal disruption to your golfing experience.

Below, you'll find a few images of the fallen trees, illustrating the impact of the storm and the hard work that went into the cleanup.

Tee Renovations

We are pleased to announce that the recent tee renovations have been successfully completed! Over the past week, the course team has scalped, cored, and top-dressed the tees to ensure a healthy grass layer heading into the dormant winter months.

Maintaining grass on our small tee surfaces is always a challenge, particularly given the small size of the tees, the impact of shade, and the high number of rounds played annually at Eastlake. Despite these obstacles, the team has done a fantastic job preparing the course for the months ahead.

One of our more problematic holes, the 6th, has been oversewn with rye grass to improve coverage. This tee will remain closed for another week while the grass establishes. During this time, the team has taken the opportunity to perform clean-up work around the hazards and reshape the collar in line with Craig Parry's plans for this hole.

We appreciate member's patience during this process and look forward to providing you with improved playing surfaces for the season ahead.

Water Levels in 13th Hole Dam

Members will no doubt have noticed, the declining water levels in the pond located near the 11th and 13th tees and the subsequent drying up of canals around the course. When this issue first became evident, the Club promptly reported the matter to Sydney Water for investigation.

Sydney Water is working closely with their contractors and the Roads and Maritime Services to identify the root cause of this issue, which may involve a blockage or other underlying problem. While a solution has yet to be found, they are committed to resolving the matter as quickly as possible.

Fortunately, the reduced water levels in this dam do not impact our ability to irrigate the course. Thanks to the use of bores located around the site, we can maintain the course's condition despite this water issue. We will keep members informed of any updates or progress made in this matter.

Mixed Pennants

Our mixed pennant team commenced their 2025 campaign with an exciting drawn match against Muirfield at Monash Golf Club last weekend. It was a closely contested encounter, and the team showed great determination in their matches.

The competition will now take a break this weekend in due to Australia Day, giving the team some time to recharge ahead of their next match. This will be played against Cabramatta at Cronulla Golf Club on Sunday, 2nd February.

We wish our team the very best for their upcoming matches and encourage members to follow their journey using the link below:

16th Hole Penalty Area Relief Explained

Members are reminded that if your ball is hooked (right-handers) or sliced (left-handers) into the red staked penalty area on Hole 16, which is defined along the greenside kerb of the path, you have the following relief options:

  1. Stroke & Distance Relief: Replay your shot from the original spot with a one-stroke penalty.
  2. Back on the Line Relief: Drop a ball back on the line from where the ball entered the penalty area, with a one-stroke penalty (note: this is unlikely to be a viable option for Hole 16).
  3. Lateral Relief: Drop a ball within two club lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area, under a one-stroke penalty.

Key Reminder: It must be known or virtually certain that the ball has entered the penalty area to take such relief, and the relief options above largely depend on the point where the ball crossed the margin of the penalty area, not where the ball may have finished (e.g., pin high).

We encourage all members to familiarize themselves with the Rules of Golf to ensure correct procedures during play. If in doubt, consult the Rules of Golf website or speak with a staff member.
